Oxford Day 10

It isn't raining but the temperature is a bit lower. Still no problem, Oxford is beautiful come rain or shine.
It is well-known that there are very prestigious private schools in this country (here they are called public schools) like Eton or Harrow. Students stay in education until they are16 years old (like in Spain) but the government has planned one more year in the near future, so they will finish at 17.

English students learn foreign languages when they are in Secondary Education and the most popular ones are Spanish, French and German. However, they are not very good at languages; after all they speak the most international language in the world!!

English universities are also very famous around the world and many foreign students come to study here as part of their preparation. Apart from Oxford University, Cambridge is another important centre of university life and education.

Here there are also some problems of discipline of course but as much as 80% of school leavers keep on studying and just about 8% do nothing. This is a very good percentage!!

Today I found a very good quotation by Rita Dunn for my fellow teachers which goes "If the child is not learning they way you are teaching, try teaching the way the child is learning"

Oxford Day 8

More rain today... No problem, all these parks and trees need water, otherwise how can they be so green?

Today we can talk a little bit about FOOD in Britain. First of all, most people will say that it is disgusting but... I don´t think so. It is true that there i svery little of a "national cuisine" and more of a international mixture so you can find dishes from many countries around the world. Remember the old colonies from Africa, the West Indies, Asia, etc. In general, they like Italian food, Chinese food, Thai food and so on.

In the morning for breakfast they usually have coffee or tea and some toasts, juices, etc. After that, around 12:00, they have a break and go for a quick sandwich, a packet of crisps, some fizzy drink, a piece of fruit... generally not a proper lunch but a snack, and this is always in a cafe, bar, in the street "al fresco" or even working "al desko!!". Remember that the basic working hours are 9-5. Afterwards, they go home and, around 6 or 7, they have dinner. Dinner is the most important meal for them. They go out very little for dinner (after all, they have been out all day!!). At the weekends they have a special breakfast, late in the morning (called BRUNCH, after mixing BReakfast and luNCH). It is very frequent to find people eating in the streets, drinking coffee or capuccinos from big plastic cups, eating chocolate bars,.... Their lifestyle is very fast and they are always in a hurry.

Oxford Day 6

Here is finally the rain!!
Today is a really typical English day with rain so it is cloudy, wet and a little bit depressing. However, I can't complain after this incredible week of fine weather with clear blue skies. Here are more videoclips of different areas to remember the good days!!


By the way...tomorrow is a very important day in London. It is 2009 London Marathon and thousands of runners will be in the streets of the capital along with thousands of people watching them sweat.

NUEVO!!! Presentación de nuestro IES

Las maravillas de la ciencia hacen que desde Oxford y, previo paso por las manos de Elizabeth y su gran ayuda, os pueda ofrecer (por fin) la presentación sobre nuestro IES en versión en inglés. Paradójicamente se va a publicar antes que la versión en español.
Creemos que es muy útil para:

• Dar a conocer a nuestro centro en general
• La llegada del nuevo alumnado
• Nuevo profesorado que venga a nuestro centro

Oxford Day 4

Well, yesterday I went to a pub and it was really nice because apart from drinks you also can have something to eat, there was live music and people were friendly and talkative. This pub is called "Cape of Good Hope" and it has got its own Facebook!! There are some very old famous pubs in Oxford that are real institutions. Some of them are hidden away in narrow alleys where you wouldn't go alone at night. But this is a very quiet city with very low crime rates. My host familiy told me that it is more common to have your bicycle stolen than your car.

Still more great weather but the weatherman said things are going to change for next week...shame!!

Last night, after the pub experience, I was walking around the city centre and it was really quiet and peaceful, not many people on the streets and all those old buildings there... however, they weren't properly lit up and everything was a bit dark.

Today I want to blog some videoclips so you can see more of Oxford.

Oxford Day 3

Hi! The weather here is still perfect...where is the English rain?
Here you have a picture of the different teachers in my group.
I can post more pictures today and, as you can see, the buildings are really great and wherever you look there is something beautiful, old, ...

There are some pictures from the river Isis and its beautiful walk alongside. That is where I usually have my lunch!! One of the pictures with rooftops was taken from the men's toilets window... can you believe it?
There are very famous colleges like Magdalene, Christ Church (where scenes of Harry Potter were filmed), New College, Corpus Cristi, Oriel, etc. Tourists can visits parts of them and there are also some towers or spires for incredible views over the city. That is why Oxford is also called "the city of dreaming spires".

Oxford Day 2

Today I'm having some problems with my camera and I can't upload new pictures...pity!!
This afternoon someone from the academy took us for an informal tour around the city and it is really a place to admire. There are beautiful hidden alleys and corners that you wouldn't find unless somebody takes you there. The weather is STILL so good that I can't believe it.
Today we have been discussing things related to the education system in the different countries we represent (Finland, Spain, Romania, Turkey, Poland, Lithuania, Czec Republic, etc.) and you find out really interesting things like:
- Teachers have a day off in Romania to compensate the work load they take home after school hours
- In Poland they have an oral exam in English after their secondary studies like the one we are about to introduce in Spain
- In Romania language classes are divided in two to make it easier
- In Poland private schools are nearly non-existent

Interesting, isn't it? We have also talked about the Education system in the UK where:
- Students can be placed in different programmes according to their competence
- All students have to wear uniforms no matter what school they attend
- Private schools are not very frequent unlike in Spain

Tomorrow we have a special event: A typical night in a pub. But that is another story!!

Oxford Day 1

Hi from Oxford! Here I am at least and the weather is just great! I can't believe I'm in England. Everybody is wearing T-shirst and eating ice-cream, the sun is shining, no rain, cloudless sky... I have taken some pictures of different buildinds and, as you can see, Oxford is a really beatiful city full of students, bicycles and tourists. Because of this it is very multicultural and you can see many different people in the streets. Language academies are also very frequent in the city centre, apart from souvenir shops. Everywhere you look there stone buildings with lovely windows, green lawn, statues, etc.

So far so good. I will send more pictures and information in the next days. See you!!

Rumbo a Oxford

Desde el 20 de abril al 20 de mayo la redacción de este blog se realizará desde Oxford (Inglaterra), aunque esto en la era de Internet es algo totalmente insignificante. Como coordinador de la Sección Bilingüe de nuestro IES, solicité una licencia por estudios tipo C para poder hacer un curso de formación continua. Este profesor ahora se convertirá durante 2 semanas en alumno otra vez. El curso para profesores de Inglés como lengua extranjera se impartirá en Oxford House College.
Seguiré en contacto con el día a día del nuestro IES pero me gustaría ir contando cosas de interés que pasen por allí. De momento os dejo unos enlaces para ir abriendo boca:

Visita a Moguer

Ya comentamos que nuestro alumnado bilingüe visitaría la localidad de Moguer para conocer de cerca los lugares que tanto inspiraron al poeta Nobel Juan Ramón Jiménez. Esta visita se realizó el jueves 16 de abril con la colaboración de las profesoras Rosa Hernández y Maribel Real acompañadas por el Secretario del centro Juan Rodríguez. Aquí os dejamos una foto del grupo antes de subir al autobús y comentarios de Beatriz, Mari Carmen y Noelia.
"En Moguer visitamos el convento de Santa Clara, en el cual había extensas habitaciones, cocinas, salones para celebrar bodas y una habitación donde en la pared estaban grabados los escudos de las familias que tenían a sus hijas allí. En el convento de Santa Clara solo podían estar personas de familias acomodadas.....

...En la casa de Juan Ramón Jiménez había una gran biblioteca con muchos libros y revistas, en su habitacion había retratos de toda su familia. Juan Ramón se casó con Zenobia Camprubí. Estudió el bachiller en la escuela de los Jesuitas.Y ganó un premio Nobel pero no fue a recogerlo porque tres días antes murió su mujer. Actualmente los restos de Juan Ramón y Zenobia estón enterrados en el cementerio de Moguer...

...Vimos su dormitorio, su baño, el patio pero lo que más me impresionó fue su despacho, donde él trabajaba y contenía en muebles mil quinientas revistas y mil trescientos libros que publicó....
...visitamos el río Tinto al que Juan Ramón le había dedicado un capítulo y el cementerio. Allí también leímos unos de sus capítulos..."

Day trip in Gibraltar

Some students from ESO year 3 groups are right now wandering around Gibraltar's Main Street or maybe fighting the Rock monkeys so they don't take their food away (I mean the monkeys!!) Elizabeth made an excellent newsletter about the colony as you can see just below. Apart from political and historical controversies, Gibraltar is something we have so close that we must know something about it...after all, we are neighbours!!

Por cierto, si a veces se ven fotos de caballos, espectaculares chicas, desastres en la India, etc., no es por culpa de este redactor. A veces nos visitan "presentaciones ajenas" a nuestro blog y no sabemos porqué.

Materiales AICLE en las editoriales

Las editoriales de inglés también están interesadas en ir ofreciendo materiales AICLE (Aprendizaje Integrado de Contenidos en Lengua Extranjera). Sin embargo, nos encontramos en los primeros pasos y aún queda por hacer. Al principio ofrecían meras traducciones de libros españoles de la asignatura en cuestión y otras ofertaban libros publicados en Inglaterra y pensados para nativos. Lógicamente, ninguna de las opciones es la más adecuada. Una de las ventajas de las secciones bilingües es que el profesorado implicado y los auxiliares de conversación han creado, buscado... lo que necesitaban específicamente. Estos son los mejores materiales que podemos encontrar porque responden exactamente a nuestras necesidades, a nuestro alumnado, etc.

De todas formas, hay que reconocer que están haciendo un esfuerzo por ofrecernos material para usar en forma de:

* Lecturas graduadas temáticas asociadas a tópicos AICLE

* Cuadernillos temáticos

* Cartelería

* Sitios web abiertos o bajo suscripción

HAPPY EASTER!!

Suena un poco raro eso de "Happy Easter" para los países de tradición católica pero... en los países anglosajones, estos días no están ligados al recogimiento, al silencio, etc. Una tradición muy bonita es "Easter Egg Hunt", donde los más pequeños de la casa buscan por todas partes los huevos de Pascua. En este vídeo nos explican como planificar esta actividad con todo lujo de detalles.


Espero que la "búsqueda de los huevos" sea más fácil que la que muestra este otro diverido vídeo:

VIAJE MULTIAVENTURA 1º DE E.S.O.

¡Arroz con choco!, gritábamos en el momento de la fotografía…pues sí como podéis ver nos fuimos de viaje multiaventura.
Todo un éxito, actividades interesantes, estupendos monitores, buena comida…la verdad es que todo salió a pedir de boca, incluso tuvimos un concierto a cargo de un artista internacional del cuál desconocíamos el arte que escondía, ¿Quién sería?... Santa Bárbara de Casa, y la empresa Andevalo Aventura fueron los escenarios escogidos para la realización de actividades en el medio natural, los alumnos participantes fueron de los grupos A, B y C de 1º de E.S.O.
Muchas fueron las experiencias que allí vivimos, emocionantes y divertidas, desde descenso en rapel por la pared de la presa de un pantano, hasta juegos nocturnos en los que nos reímos juntos, monitores, profesores y alumnos. También recuerdo algunas cosillas no tan divertidas, como el despertar del 2º día en el que nuestros “originales “ monitores nos despertaron con una sirena a las 8 de la mañana, gracias a la cual salte de la cama en ropa interior y por poco me voy al pasillo ¡¡Pensando que había pasado algo¡¡...pero por suerte me quede en la puerta…cosas que pueden pasar…
Dese el departamento de educación física y en mi nombre, os invito a preguntar a vuestros compañeros cómo fue la experiencia y que os animéis en futuras ediciones, ya que son vivencias que solo en estas situaciones podemos experimentar, y sin ellas nuestro paso por el instituto (profesores y alumnos), quedaría cojo en algunos aspectos.

Seguimos preparando la visita de nuestro futuro alumnado de 6º de Primaria. Creemos interesante contar con unos guías especiales que les acerquen el día a día del nuevo centro donde van a estudiar a partir del próximo mes de septiembre.

Por ello, nos gustaría que algunos integrantes de nuestros dos grupos de 1º ESO bilingües fuesen los guías y ayudasen en las tareas de enseñar el centro y sus instalaciones, hablar de sus experiencia del paso de Primaria a Secundaria, el trabajo realizado en la Sección Bilingüe de Inglés, etc.
De esta manera, hemos elegido a dos alumnas de 1º ABC (Isabel y Cristina) para guiar al alumnado del CEIP "Alonso Barba" y a dos alumnas de 1º DEF (Virginia Martín y Fátima) para guiar al alumnado del CEIP "Oria Castañeda", junto a sus profesores/as y equipo directivo.
Para hacer la selección de guías se les pidió que hiciesen dos escritos contando en uno porqué creían que prodría ser buenos guías y en otro cómo fue su tránsito de Primaria a Secundaria, qué es lo que les gusta más/menos de nuestro IES, etc.
A modo de agradecimiento, el centro va a regalar a estas cuatro guías entradas de cine para que puedan ver sus películas favoritas en la gran pantalla.
NB Esta idea está inspirada en una experiencia muy similar que desarrollan en el instituto sueco con el que tenemos en marcha un proyecto de intercambio escolar.
