Martin Luther King Day

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a United States holiday marking the birthdate of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., observed on the third Monday of January each year, around the time of King's birthday, January 16. It is one of three United States federal holidays to commemorate an individual person.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He went to college in Philadelphia and Boston where segregation was not so bad. After earning a doctorate degree, he returned to Montgomery, Alabama with his wife. MLK became a pastor and a community leader. He organized nonviolent protests and marches for civil rights. His “I Have a Dream” speech is very famous. Segregation was ended by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. MLK won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee.
